DESI Provides various types of harmonic mitigation equipment from K-rated transformers to Active Harmonic Filters manufactured by Staco Energy Products.
Harmonics can be, but are not always, problematic within a facilities electrical distribution system. In a worst case scenario, they can cause distortion in the current and voltage within the systems. Those distortions can cause overheating of the neutral bus which could result in a fire within the facility. Under less dramatic conditions, distortion of current and voltage can have a negative impact on other equipment within the facility such as motors, air conditioner etc.
Harmonics are often generated by such electronic (non-linear) loads as:
- Computers (power supplies)
- Printers & copiers
- Fluorescent lighting (ballasts)
- Adjustable speed drives
- Variable frequency drives
- UPS’s (rectifiers and battery chargers)
There are other types of electronic devices within a facility which can cause harmonic distortion as well. The gallery associated with this page offers quite a bit of educational material as well as suggestions for solutions.
As always, please contact us if you would like assistance of any kind related to any aspect of harmonics related to your facility.
